The Nigerian music industry is a very competitive one. We hear outstanding music from a lot of genre and we find it quite tough to decide who is the Queen bee of music as far as Nigeria is concerned. There are however a select few that have topped the charts due to their voice, persona and talent, but the question is how do we determine the best?

Asa is one Nigerian musician who has carved a niche for herself, she had role models such as Femi Kuti, Raphael saadiq and the likes and she toed their footsteps. Whenever her name is mentioned with other female singers in Nigeria, people are of the opinion that she should not be compared as she stands out strong and has a persona that is incomparable. Whether she is the best vocalist or not, as far as Nigerian female musicians are concerned, she has staked her claim and has become a household name that has come to stay.

This is one artiste that is loved by many both at home and internationally. Tiwa always has her name mentioned whenever top Nigerian female artistes are being discussed and lot of people actually belief she is Nigeria’s ‘Queen of pop’. She recently married Tee Billz and has also recently given birth to a son Jamil. Her break from the music production is said to have affected her Queenly position as others are threatening to take over among whom are Seyi Shay, Omawunmi and Waje. Talking about her struggles in climbing the ladder, she discusses how she faced sexual harassment in the music industry but was able to overcome that with the help of her husband who was her boyfriend then. She has also been involved with controversies such as her firing her husband as her manager and her 18+music  video titled ‘Wanted’. She has spoken out that she has no regrets and while she is aware that what she does has an influence on many, she also has a sexual side that she is naturally going to want to show. She does however, agree that the video should have been more restrictive especially age wise. With all the struggles, she is bent on reclaiming her position as the first lady of Nigerian music and has also recently clinched herself a deal with pampers alongside her Globacom deal.

On returning home, she soon became highly recognized and has since been listed among the top musicians in Nigeria. However, Miss Shay is not without her controversies, first she was heard saying she had no idea who the popular Amber Rose is meanwhile she had attended an event for D’banj’s 10th year anniversary where Amber Rose had been present, in Nigeria. Of recent she has also been heard to dismissively say she does not know who Tiwa Savage is. This has earned an uproar from fans and the public who feel she is somewhat unoriginal. In addition, she had a controversy with the former president of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, where fans accused her of trying to seduce him with her rather skimpy outfit. This she explained was what she had planned for her performance and also had another outfit for after; she also says her stage life in no way depicts her real life. Most recent among Miss Shay’s controversies is where she pronounces ‘Two’ as ‘TUWO’ during a trick test by a member of pulse-TV. Fans found this hilarious and took jabs at the artiste but this has in no way dampened her shine as seen with her recent performance with Ne-yo. She is still kicking and vying for the top in Nigerian music.
